Heartcode BLS is a hybrid online course, consisting of online learning followed by an in-person skill session. This course does grant you an American Heart Association BLS Provider e-Card upon completion of both the online module and in-person skill session.

This course is intended for nurses, paramedics, EMT’s physicians and other healthcare professionals who require advanced CPR knowledge. Students will be trained in the following skills: CPR for Adults, Children and Infants, use of an AED, rescue breathing, and obstructed airway management. To determine proficiency with the skills learned in this course, students will be asked to complete the online module and demonstrate CPR during their in-person skill session.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive an American Heart Association BLS Provider eCard. This card does NOT allow for employment at a childcare facility, and is instead intended for in-hospital or pre-hospital healthcare professionals. Should you need assistance with obtaining certification for employment with a daycare or other childcare facility please reach out to campbellbe2@upmc.edu

Online Module:

The online module is meant to replace any time in class spent lecturing. All in-person lecture material that is compatible with the online format is presented and taught through the online module. This format allows you to digest the material at your own pace, and complete the module at your convenience.

Skills Session:

The in-person skill session involves hands on practice of the cognitive content learned online. Students are expected to have an understanding of the material they learned online. The instructors will assist you in learning the hands on portion of CPR/AED/airway/breathing skills. You will be asked to perform CPR during the skill session, while an instructor is present to provide guidance/feedback.

You must complete the online module prior to attending the in-person skill session.

Scheduling:

Once you purchase the course, an electronic code will be sent to you within 48hrs. Upon completion of the online module, you must contact Rob Scarborough at scarboroughrw@upmc.edu schedule your in-person skill session. Both the online module and the in-person skill session are required for successful completion of the course, in order to obtain the AHA BLS e-card!

There is flexibility when scheduling your in-person skill session, however it is based on instructor availability. If you are concerned about date/time incompatibility please contact Ben Campbell at campbellbe2@upmc.edu
